Optional analytics

I use Google Analytics to understand which pages readers visit, how they arrive and how long they engage with the site. For visitors whose connection Cloudflare locates in the United States, analytics is on by default unless you have declined or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal. You can turn it off using Turn off analytics or Analytics choices in the footer. In other locations, or if the location check fails, Google Analytics loads only after you choose Allow analytics. Closing that consent prompt does not allow tracking. You can use the entire site either way.

When analytics is on, Google receives page addresses and titles, a limited referring-site address, browser and device information, engagement events and cookie identifiers that help distinguish visits. Google also processes your IP address to provide the service and estimate general location; Google says GA4 does not log or store individual IP addresses. The site excludes URL query strings and fragments from the page addresses it sends, and does not send names, email addresses, correspondence or a signed-in user ID. Advertising consent is kept off, and this setup does not use Google Signals or personalized advertising.

The _ga and _ga_4KLQYH1YTG cookies last up to 180 days. Your allow or decline choice, its version and its date are saved in this browser’s local storage for 180 days so I can respect that choice. This preference storage is separate from analytics; automatic U.S. measurement is not recorded as an affirmative consent choice. Dismissing the prompt is remembered for the current browser-tab session without enabling analytics. Cloudflare supplies only the applicable analytics mode to your browser for this location check; this check does not send your country or IP address to another location service. Clearing your browser storage or using another browser may cause the choice to appear again.

Use Analytics choices in the footer to change your decision at any time. Choosing No thanks or Turn off analytics stops future measurement, clears this site’s Google Analytics cookies and reloads the page if analytics was running. It does not erase data already received by Google. Hosting

Pages and images are served through Cloudflare infrastructure. Delivering a page involves technical information such as an IP address, the requested URL and browser information. The hosting service may process request data for delivery, security and abuse prevention.

Email and corrections

If you email me, I use your address and message to read your feedback, check a correction or review the issue you raised. Your email provider and mine process the correspondence to deliver and store it. I do not add messages or addresses to a mailing list.

Please leave out personal information that I don’t need to understand the issue you raised. Publication contact details are on the Contact page.
